Health and Medical Information
Mandatory Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever (YF): A Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate is MANDATORY for entry into Uganda and Rwanda, and often required for Kenya/Tanzania if arriving from an endemic country (which includes a transit stop of $>12$ hours in any other East African country). Your YF certificate must be carried with your passport.
Recommended Prophylaxis and Vaccines
- Malaria: Malaria is present year-round in all four countries, particularly in lower-altitude and rural areas. Malaria Prophylaxis is highly recommended (consult your doctor for the best type, e.g., Malarone, Lariam, or Doxycycline).
- Routine Vaccines: Ensure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines (MMR, Diphtheria-Tetanus-Polio) and consider Typhoid, Hepatitis A and B, and Rabies.
Medical Evacuation & Insurance
- COMPREHENSIVE Travel Insurance is Essential. The policy must include medical evacuation coverage ($\text{MedEvac}$), which allows for emergency air transfer to a major medical hub like Nairobi (Kenya) or back to your home country. Remote safari camps have limited medical facilities.
- Hydration: The African sun is intense. Drink plenty of bottled water (minimum $3$ liters per day).
