Tanzania & Rwanda
Generally very safe with stable governance and a strong focus on tourist security.
Petty Crime: Minor theft (pickpocketing, bag snatching) can occur in Stone Town (Zanzibar) and Kigali.
Kenya
Generally safe in safari parks; high caution advised in cities.
Cities: High risk of petty and opportunistic crime in Nairobi and Mombasa. Avoid walking alone or displaying valuables after dark. Use only trusted, pre-arranged transport.
Uganda
Generally safe in the tourist circuit; higher caution advised in urban areas and specific borders.
Border Areas: Avoid non-essential travel within 50km of the South Sudan and DRC borders due to risk of armed groups. Urban Areas: Be vigilant against petty crime in Kampala.
Primate Trekking Safety
Highly secure.
Always follow the instructions of the armed park rangers and guides. Never attempt to approach or feed the animals.

General Security Best Practices

  • Valuables: Keep expensive jewellery, watches, and excessive cash at home. Use hotel safes.
  • Transport: Never use unmarked taxis or motorbike taxis (boda-bodas) in cities unless pre-arranged by your lodge or Katuma African Safaris.
  • Photography: It is illegal to take photos of military installations, government buildings, police stations, or border posts. Always ask permission before photographing local people.
