Best Game Viewing: Sparse vegetation, animals congregate at water holes. Best Trekking: Drier, less slippery trails for Gorillas/Chimps. Migration Peak: The Migration is typically in the Masai Mara (Kenya) during this time
Short Rains
November to Early December
Short, intermittent afternoon showers. Skies are generally clear.
Lower Prices: Deals often available for lodges. Birding: Migratory birds arrive. Photography: Beautiful green landscapes.
Short Dry
Mid-December to February
Hot, sunny, dry
Excellent Game Viewing: High concentration of game in southern Tanzania and northern Uganda. Migration: Calving season in the southern Serengeti (Tanzania).
Low / Long Rains
March to May
Heaviest rains, especially in April and May. Temperatures are humid.
Budget Travel: Best time for discounted rates. Quiet Parks: Lowest tourist numbers offer a private safari experience. Trekking: Trails can be very muddy and challenging.

General Security Best Practices

  • Valuables: Keep expensive jewellery, watches, and excessive cash at home. Use hotel safes.
  • Transport: Never use unmarked taxis or motorbike taxis (boda-bodas) in cities unless pre-arranged by your lodge or Katuma African Safaris.
  • Photography: It is illegal to take photos of military installations, government buildings, police stations, or border posts. Always ask permission before photographing local people.
